Asafoetida (Ferula assa-foetida) is a stinky resin! That is what Asafoetida means! Asa comes from the word "aza" in Persian, and foetida from the latin - for stinking. The smell and taste do improve upon cooking, losing the stench and beginning to resemble onion. This root has an outstanding reputation for strengthening the digestive system. Asafoetida has a reputation as a stimulant, a laxative, a cleanser, and as an herb that can expel gas from the intestines. Asafoetida has also been used a deodorant, working with the body to eliminate odor causing health issues. Often scent issues come from an overburdened or unhealthy digestive system, so this herb's ability to improve body odor is a sign of its ability to improve digestion.

F. assa-foetida can also effect the heart, coughs, insomnia, and more. If all of these uses are not enough, it also works with Valerian root, making it more effective in helping people to fall asleep and stay asleep.
