The book is a joyful expedition through the origins and philosophical /aesthetic aspects of rock gardens, beginning with Taoist gardens in China and meandering, in a raked gravel way, to those of Japan. The text is augmented with stunning photographic visuals. The author, a poet, studied Zen with Shunryu Suzuki of San Francisco in the early 60's, and in writing the book recalled the long stillnesses, the wisps of sandal incense, the eternal quiet of early mornings sitting in zazen, and the text of the book evokes these along with the historical and physical descriptions of rock gardens through time
