Artist's Book Of Inspiration: A Collection Of Thoughts On Art, Artists & Creativity

Author: Fitzgerald, Astrid

The author, Astrid Fitzgerald , May 17, 1997
Comments from Reviewers
Read these words and make a manifesto of them, or at least guidelines toward the re-humanization of art and our world.-- Thomas Moore ---- Astrid's Fitzgerald's anthology of thoughts on art is the kind of book that will find the true reader: one who seeks solidarity with the kindred spirits of all times and places.-- Dore Ashton--- Open this book each time with a sense of celebration - that such things have been said and felt so cleanly and that they are true. This is a permanent collection, light for the studio shelf--. Roger Lipsey--

The publisher, Lindisfarne Books , December 10, 1999
A collection of words to inspire you.
ôIf I must place my trust somewhere, I would invest it in the psyche of sensitive observers who are free of the conventions of understanding. I would have no apprehensions about the use they would make of the pictures for the needs of their own spirit. For if there is both need and spirit, there is bound to be a real transaction.ö ù Mark Rothko

ôWhen I think of art I think of beauty. Beauty is the mystery of life. It is not in the eye, it is in the mind. In our minds there is awareness of perfection.ö ù Agnes Martin

Gathered during one personÆs life of making art and studying the spiritual traditions, this collection of the best thoughts on art, artists, and the creative processùdrawn from many traditions, times, and placesùwill guide and inspire all who seek the sources of creativity amid the fractured confusion of our contemporary world.

From The Publisher
The purpose of art is to open the heart, to reaffirm to human beings that they may be the conscious builders of a new world. Far from the notion that "art is dead", creativity and art are alive and well and can still express the unique ideas needed to give shape to a humane culture, by expressing new impulses out of the wisdom of the past and by locating for each generation the ground of our common being.

This collection of thoughts from artists and thinkers of the past and present has been lovingly gathered over many years in the personal journals of the artist Astrid Fitzgerald and reveals something of the mystery in which creativity finds its way from the energies of the cosmos into the imagination and faculties of the individual artist and eventually into the solitude of the studio and finally into a work of art.

From the reports of mystics to the observations of scientists, these passages have been arranged in this volume to provide brief glimpses into the recesses of artistic being, into the tentative formations in consciousness, the first glimmers of imagination, the distinctive faculties of the creative mind, and the tensions of artistic expression in the workshop and the creative life.

Fitzgerald's great contribution has been to gather into a meaningful collection the words of 2,500 years of genius as a resource and inspiration for all those who would break out of creative limitations and take a bold step into the future.
