Smart Brain Train (ages 9-12)

Author: Anderson, Nina & Meiser, Frances

. The authors of The Smart Brain Train explains how your brain works in an easy to understand, illustrated story that can be read by children. Not only do the authors tell us what foods to eat and what exercises are fun for the brain, but they also detail each item in a section for parents and teachers. One of the most controversial hazards to children's learning curve is wireless technology. Cell towers, cell phones, WiFi and computers can potentially affect learning in a negative way due to the effect microwave and electromagnetic frequencies have on the brain. Electronic games do facilitate quick responses that prepare children for life in a fast paced workplace, but they can also be addictive and preempt outdoor activities and exercise needed to balance a child's life.

Parents should be concerned with the development of their children's brain. Learning problems which manifest later in life could be prevented if some of the recommendations outlined in The Smart Brain Train are implemented. We must look first towards nutritional deficiencies in our diets. Obesity, fatigue and lethargy are becoming epidemic in our school-aged children. What is not readily linked to poor diet is the focus on learning disabilities. By teaching healthy brain habits to children at an early age we may see a decrease in the problems associated with learning as they mature.
