In The Eyes of the Sun I tell the amazing story of astrology’s evolution into a qualitative science of depth psychology. We can think of astrology as a both classic and cosmic genre of psychology. (“To me astrology IS psychology,” says an old friend.) Over the past seventy years astrology has enjoyed a fertile marriage with Jungian psychology, and to a lesser extent with humanistic psychology. A host of experimental studies have been conducted on astrological influences, with some notably positive results. Centers for the study of psychological astrology are emerging. Yet the whole relationship between astrology and psychology is still early in the game. To further this relationship I cover a lot of bases. Along with Jungian and humanistic psychology, I present astrology in connection with developmental psychology, Freudian theory and spiritual psychology. I put astrology in the ring with the eight-hundred pound gorilla of hard science. Developing consistent psychological terminology I offer original explications of the zodiacal signs, the planets, the astrological houses, retrograde planets and moon signs. In a chapter on astrology’s history I shed new light on astrology’s demise in the 17th century. Surprise: it wasn’t the Church and it wasn’t stuffed-shirt scientists. It was the court of popular opinion. But by the same token popular opinion was instrumental in astrology’s resurgence in the twentieth century—against the prejudices of science and academia. In tackling the monster issue of quantitative vs. qualitative science I present astrology as variable parts empirical discipline, study of principles, and hostage to tradition. The title is both metaphor and pun. My father (Yale class of 1921!) was opposite to me in both sun sign (he born 2/3/1900, me 8/17/49) and world view. Though he never lent the least credence to astrology he effectively gave me a research grant to follow my star and travel the odyssey of The Eyes of the Sun to its conclusion. In writing The Eyes of the Sun I sought to reach out to the skeptical world of my father. Through the twenty years I worked on the book while doing research and practicing as a counseling/consulting astrologer, I felt as if I were living monastic vows. Since I finished I’ve had a lot of fun making money in online trading and investing. But now I’m heading back to the monastary as I gear up for my next book, to deal in part with yods, the moon’s nodes and T-squares.
