Based on the Pitt Rivers Museum exhibit of the same name, this book documents the Tibetan capital between 1930 and 1950, when British diplomats cultivated close relations with members of the Tibetan elite. Photographic portraits of Tibetan notables and scenes of pre-occupation Lhasa appear alongside watercolors by Indian artist Kanwal Krishna, who accompanied the British to the installation of the current Dalai Lama in 1940. The visual record is contextualized with essays by Clare Harris, Tsering Shakya, and Elizabeth Edwards.
